Established in 1997, the Toronto Film Critics Association is comprised of Toronto-based journalists and broadcasters who specialize in film criticism and commentary. The founding members of the TFCA were Cameron Bailey, Angie Baldassarre, Gemma Files, Marc Glassman, Peter Howell, Brian D. Johnson, Liam Lacey, Norm Wilner, and Wyndham Wise. All major dailies, weeklies, and a variety of other print, online, and broadcast outlets are represented.

The TFCA is affiliated with the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI). Our members have sat on critics’ juries in Cannes, Berlin, Venice, Toronto, Miami, Palm Springs, Chicago, Pusan, Moscow, Amsterdam, London and Vienna, among others.

Every year, the TFCA presents awards for Best Picture; Best Director; Outstanding Lead Performance; Outstanding Supporting Performance; Breakout Performance of the Year; Outstanding Performance in a Canadian Film; Best Original Screenplay; Best Adapted Screenplay; Best First Feature; the Allan King Documentary Award; Best International Feature; Best Animated Feature; and Rogers Best Canadian Film and Rogers Best Canadian Documentary, both of which offer a $50,000 purse courtesy of Rogers.

When appropriate, the Association also presents the Company 3 Luminary Award to a Canadian who has enriched the understanding and appreciation of film in this country, the Stella Artois Jay Scott Prize for an emerging Canadian artist, and the Telefilm Canada Emerging Critic Award.
