Membership Eligibility

For the purposes of membership, the TFCA defines a film critic as one who contributes to a publication of professional standards and quality for their editorial film work for a minimum period of three consecutive years.

By nature of the appellation, incoming members of the Toronto Film Critics Association work and reside in the Greater Toronto Area. Members’ work must be available to Toronto audiences, whether in print, broadcast, podcasting, digital video, or similar formats in which they offer substantive film coverage.

Membership is open to those who regularly publish feature-length film criticism as described above. Membership is individual, not organizational, and a critic’s successor at a given publication is not automatically a TFCA member; nor does the TFCA propose to limit membership of active members from any single outlet.

The TFCA strives to reflect the Toronto film scene. The membership is committed to including critics from all walks of life, such as those who identify as women, Black, Indigenous, People of Colour, 2SLGBTQIA+, people with disabilities including neurodiversity, religious minorities, language minorities, and/or other equity-deserving groups. Applicants are encouraged to self-identify if they are comfortable doing so. The TFCA also aims to ensure that its membership represents a variety of publications, as per above.

Please note that the membership application process is often quite competitive. Although candidates may only submit once per year, there is no limit to the number of years in which you may apply.

    Ethical Standards

For professional film critics, coverage is dependent on privileged access to advance screenings, interviews and promotional materials. To maintain its reputation for high standards of integrity and credibility, the TFCA has a zero tolerance policy on piracy. The TFCA respects the industry standards with regard to duty of care on film copyright and piracy: members are expected to protect the privacy of advance and private codes, and hard copy screeners from public sharing. Similarly, the TFCA expects members to abide by journalistic principles, which includes no tolerance for intentional plagiarism, regardless of format or medium; the use of generative AI for writing material for publication; it is also unacceptable to invent or falsify a quote, source, anecdote or detail.

As a member chapter of FIPRESCI, we agree to abide by its statutes, including a commitment to statute 2, which agrees to “safeguard the freedom and ethics of film criticism and film journalism and of information…To encourage the exchange of ideas and experience among film critics and film journalists of all countries and thereby create, outside all ideological and political distinctions, a new foundation for a permanent dialogue.”

Membership in the TFCA is a privilege. If any member is found to have violated these guidelines and standards or to have by their actions compromised this integrity, the TFCA Executive may take discretionary disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion.
