Statement Regarding Edits to Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ Awards Speech
March 4, 2026
The Toronto Film Critics Association is saddened to learn that Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers has chosen to return her award. We were proud to recognize her work, which was both deserving and meaningful. Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ speech — along with those of other recipients — was shortened to maintain the timing of the awards show. That decision was mine as president, and in light of this outcome, I will be tendering my resignation.
We encourage all winners to share any additional remarks on their personal platforms, and we also encourage people to visit Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers’ website. Film is a powerful space for dialog, reflection and human connection. Recognizing and celebrating the work of all artists is essential in fostering a cultural landscape that values diverse perspectives, histories and lived experiences. Artists bring deeply personal and often complex narratives to the global stage — stories that explore identity, heritage, displacement, resilience and hope. But supporting and amplifying all voices, the arts community can create opportunities for understanding and empathy through creative expression.
